Mary Blue is a community herbalist, organic farmer, educator, and the founder of Farmacy Herbs—a grassroots herbal company and educational center based in Providence, Rhode Island. With over 25 years of experience, Mary has dedicated her life to making herbalism accessible, justice-centered, and deeply rooted in community.
Her work blends hands-on herbal training with a commitment to health justice, social activism, and regenerative farming. Since founding Farmacy Herbs in 2006, Mary has welcomed thousands of students, interns, and volunteers into her Herbal Foundations Certificate Program and broader community programs—many of whom have gone on to create herb businesses of their own. She has taught at hospitals, schools, conferences, and nonprofits across the country, and currently holds a teaching associate position at Brown University Medical School, where she teaches Western Herbalism to integrative medicine residents.
Mary’s healing philosophy centers on supporting personal and planetary health through herbs, nutrition, and lifestyle—not treating disease, but cultivating resilience. Her approach weaves education, social justice, and politically compassionate herbalism into every aspect of her work.
She is the director of the documentary Herbal Aide, which showcases herbalists working in frontline communities, and she continues to run a grant program supporting accessible herbal care through the Herbal Aide initiative. She is also a founding member of several radical health and community groups including the Northeast Radical Healthcare Network, Traditions Not Trademarks, and the Sage Healing Collaborative.
Mary’s work has been honored with numerous awards—including the Northeast Herbal Association’s Community Herbalist Award—and has been featured in The New York Times, Bust Magazine, Rhode Island Monthly, and more. When she’s not teaching or making medicine, you’ll find her in the garden, biking through Providence, or working toward a more just and herbal-infused world.
