Over the past 30 years, James has worked as an herbal educator, clinician, and researcher. He currently serves as the Department Chair for Nutrition & Herbal Medicine at Maryland University of Integrative Health (MUIH).
James has worked across a spectrum of integrative health fields and has taught didactic, experiential, and clinical courses in departments of herbal medicine, health sciences, integrative health studies, research, and applied philosophy. His current teaching focus is materia medica. James has conducted research in herbal medicine, nutrition, yoga therapy, acupuncture, and wellness. Publications in herbal medicine include studies on the cognitive effects of herbs and phytochemicals, the attitudes and use of evidence-informed practice among herbal practitioners, and the role of context effects in herbal medicine.
James serves as board member for the Accreditation Council for Nutrition Professional Education and advisor for the American Herbal Pharmacopoeia.
