In the folk tradition of Ireland, the wise woman \u2013 the bean feasa \u2013 was more than a healer of physical ills: she was also called upon to heal emotional and spiritual disorders, and to keep the community in a balanced relationship with the Otherworld. The power and authority of the bean feasa derived specifically from her close association with the Otherworld, and the knowledge, wisdom and skill which derived from it. In this class, we\u2019ll explore traditional stories about wise women, and the relevance of their practice for women\u2019s lives today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
