Symposium Special Events & Activities ~
- Author’s Book Signing & Tea Social in Balfour Hood Center on Friday evening. Meet the herbal authors, opportunity to purchase books and to have them signed by the authors. And bring the books you already have that you’d like signed.
- Meet the Artist. Herbal Artists will be in the Art Exhibit Room from 9:30-10 on Friday evening so stop by, meet the artists, and enjoy the beautiful art pieces.
- Rising Appalachia in concert. Sisters Chloe and Leah Smith will rock your souls! Wonderful uplifting music throughout the IHS.
- Summer Solstice Ceremony. Join Matthais Reisen and Rocio Alarcon for a special honoring of the seasons and the welcoming of summer on Sunday morning.
- The IHS features several herbal related films over the weekend, often followed by a discussion with the filmmaker(s). Films we’ll be highlighting this year include, “The Meaning of Tea w/Scott Cummingham, Numen, the Nature of Plants with Ann Armbrecht and Terry Youk, A Tribute to Michael Moore, and several others soon to be announced.
- The Herbalist’s Ball on Saturday night. Dress up in your finest and come dance the night away. Join us for the Traditional Kava Toast with Herbal Ed Smith. Great Music! Good Food! Delicious Kava Punch. And Fine Company!
Other Good Things Happening Over the Weekend
* Massage
For those of you aching for a massage, there are several excellent masseuses with heavenly hands available to give massages to the IHS participants. Each of the Massage Practitioners is experienced therapists. Space is limited and fills up quickly, so sign up early (Sign up sheets are at the Symposium Information Booth in BH Center). All massage rooms are located on the first floor in Stanton Hall (see map).
Please note; if you miss an appointment, you will still be responsible for payment. Pay therapists directly.
Enjoy an hour or two of quiet bliss!
* Wheaton Tree Walk and two hundred acres of adjoining woodlands
Wheaton College is home to many fine old specimen trees as well as woodlands that adjoin the campus. Do find time during the weekend to greet these ‘elder trees’ and for a quiet stroll in a lovely eastern mixed hardwood/ever green forest. Pick up a copy of the self guided walking tour of the Wheaton Trees at the IHS Booth.
* Botanical Art Exhibit:
Be sure to visit the beautiful Art Exhibit by several well known herbal artists (Rm 1962, Atrium BH).
Some of the Art Work is for sale; inquire if interested.
* The 10th IHS Herbal Products Contest
All participants are welcome to participate in the Herbal Products Contest. Bring your favorite and finest herbal product. Please see Herbal Product Contest for details about entering a product and categories. Bring items for the contest to the assigned table in the Balford Hood Center when you arrive. Judging will take place on Saturday and winners announced at the Saturday Night Ball. Prizes and Award Certificates will be presented.
Please note; mark your items well.
Don’t bring valuable containers.

* Herbal Teas to Warm the Soul
A fine selection of Herb Tea is available throughout the Symposium. Tea Table is located near the entrance to the Art Exhibit Room (room # 1962). Traditional Medicinals has graciously donated tea for this event. Please help us cut back on paper waste.Bring your favorite tea mug with you. Or Reuse your paper cups! Write your name on you cup and recycle it (markers and trays for storing paper cups are provided).
* Bottled Water
Cut back on the use of plastic. If buying a plastic water bottle, keep refilling it. There are water fountains throughout campus and the water on campus is fine to drink. Bottled water is available for sale at the check out counter during meals and at the Hood Café (BH Center upstairs) on Friday from 7:30 -4.
The Hood Café in BH Center is open Friday morning from 7:30-4 for coffee, muffins, snacks, bottled water.
Relaxation Oasis
Need a few minutes to just sit and relax, get some gently pampering ~ a facial, shoulder massage and/or hand bath. The IHS offers a Relaxation Oasis for participants wishing a little pampering. Come alone or bring a partner and share together. No charge, just a smile. Kate also has beautiful hand made herbal cosmetics for sale.
